50 of the Most Powerful and Influential Women in Social Media
Posted on | October 13, 2008 |
In every industry there are a few people who are inarguably outstanding at what they do. In addition to that, they are typically charismatic, energetic, and creative. In an effort to find some of these people I asked my twitter friends to nominate people who they thought were some of the most powerful and influential women in Social Media. It was no surprise that they quickly and enthusiastically responded with the list of ladies below.
By the way, we used Alexa to evaluate each person nominated for this list. While you will undoubtedly notice that some of the ladies have a large amount of sites linked to their blogs or websites, the determining factor was ranking. Why? Ranking depicts how much traffic their blogs/websites receive over a certain period. Although Google ranking is impacted by sites linking in, Alexa appears to care much more about traffic generated by the links. Hopefully that makes sense to you.
After you have read the list, I predict you will decide that we should list some other ladies that you consider powerful and influential (not including yourself :-)) on this list. So, when that happens, please follow the instructions in the paragraph at the end of the list. Without further ado, I happily present to you 50 of the most powerful and influential women in Social Media:

If you’re saying to yourself,”Ron, you should include _______, ________, and ________,” please invest time to submit their names by leaving your comment below. That way, they’ll receive well-deserved, public acknowledgement. One more thing ! By leaving your comment on this blog, it will help your site’s search engine ranking (as well as mine) because Maria Reyes-McDavis aka WebSuccessDiva set it up that way. She rocks!
In closing, I want to congratulate you ladies who made this year’s list! You are an example to many of
what’s possible in today’s world. However, please remember that no matter how successful you are now, you have the ability to do more, be more, have more, give more, and love more. Will you? I humbly predict you will!
With your success in mind,
Ron

So, influence & power of people is determined by the traffic their blogs or websites receive? Well, I guess it is one way to measure it but not the best way, I think. You could use speaking engagements or publications or comments on their blog or have a committee rank them.
I know all lists are arbitrary, I was just surprised at the names on this list, who was on and who was left off.
As long as people take as A list and not THE list, no harm, no foul.

I think you should re-title the list “The 50 Most Powerful Women In Corporate/Business Social Media” as your list doesn’t really include any women who influential with social media and work exclusively on social good - - education, social change, nonprofit fields.
Also, great to include some lesser known folks.
You forgot two important women in the for-profit social media space and who are influential …

A great list with some really amazing women - most of whom I know.
But I’m trying to figure out how you missed women like:
Charlene Li http://blogs.forrester.com/groundswell/
Tara Hunt http://www.horsepigcow.com/
Wendy Piersall http://www.sparkplugging.com
Elisa Camahort, Jory Des Jardins and Lisa Stone http://www.blogher.com
Who really ARE setting the standard in Social Media in so many ways. :\
I guess that’s the problem with these lists - they’re limited to the circles we already run in… so some people who really make the difference are often left off.

Wow! Thank you Ron for taking the time to put together an amazing list. I’m honored to be on it alongside talented and giving women. I simply don’t know what else to say except that I am humbled and feel incredibly blessed.
Thank you again.

This is great and I would love to network with all of these women. I’m a women blogger with an Alexa ranking under 100,000 and use all forms of social media, however I don’t usually blog about it. My blog is mostly about pop culture with some technology thrown in. But I think of myself as a social media women because of my use and love of it.

Nice list. Congrats to all!
One name that jumped out to me as missing was Wendy Piersall of Sparkplugging. I was thinking she’d be top 10 when I saw the headline.

Fussy’s (Alli’s) link is broken; the “y” is missing at the end of Fussypants.
Great list and a few that should be added?

I am seriously disappointed that my wife isnt included in this list. With an alexa of 90,866, constant give-a-ways and associations with Sony & WalMart’s blogger events you’d think she would be included. Not to mention that she has over 2600 followers on twitter. Would those points makes her one of the most influential powerful women in social media? Please consider her on your next list of great women in social media.

The name of this list should be clarified because most of the women included blog about social media–that seems vitally important to how you categorize them. A better (and more time consuming) way to rate would be to include their footprints on several social media websites.
