50 Most Powerful and Influential Men in Social Media 2008

Last week, as you probably know, I published a list of the 50 Most Powerful & Influential Women in Social Media. It caused quite a stir on the internet. In fact, this blog was visited by over 2,000 unique visitors the day the list was published. I truly appreciate each of you who visited that day and the following days.

One of the amazing but unforeseen results was the nearly 200 or more visitors who left comments. Most of the comments were about one or more people that they felt should’ve been included on that list. That was fantastic.

However, all the comments were not approved for various reasons. e.g., not nice, not constructive or spam. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but please be polite, courteous, and professional to ensure that your comment will be approved. Thank you!

Crappy, fake, lead generating list. How can we even take this junk seriously when Barack Obama does not even rank? Boo…Hiss

  4. Ron Capps says:

I am honored to be included by you amongst this fine group of social media practitioners, potential mentors and future colleagues.

I’m sure that all who were identified by you are appreciative and can agree that any compilation like this serves whatever ends that the consumer of the data chooses to give it in their decisions about their social options and assorted available platforms.

  5. Scott Allen says:

Hmm… have to admit, I feel a bit slighted. ;-)

But we have a saying in Texas — “It ain’t braggin’ if ya done it.” So since some of the third wave of social media experts seem to have no idea who I am, for the record…

One of my sites, http://TheVirtualHandshake.com, is #552,812 on Alexa, with 302 linking in. In terms of pure traffic, that’s #44. In terms of influence (of which links is a better measure), it’s on a par with those much higher on the list.

My other social media site, http://LinkedIntelligence.com, is #426,307 (#41) with 216 linking in.

And those aren’t even my main site. Now it isn’t focused exclusively on social media, and since it’s on a subdomain (http://entrepreneurs.about.com), you can’t get Alexa stats for it, but using other tools that look at subdomains (e.g., Quantcast), it would still be in the top 10 (about on a par with Dvorak.org). See http://is.gd/4ANy

Not to mention the fact that my first book, The Virtual Handshake, was the first book (2005) on the business use of social media and social networking. I wonder how many people on this list read and were influenced by it. I see at least a dozen that I know for sure were.

And how about my business partner, Jay Deragon? His site, http://www.relationship-economy.com, is #201,288 on Alexa with 74 linking in.

Some of us just spend more time swimming in the mainstream business pool than in the social media fishbowl. ;-)

  6. Scott Allen says:

A few more noticeably absent people:

Jason Alba – http://JibberJobber.com is #132,624 on Alexa with 446 linking in. Plus he’s written very popular books on LinkedIn and Facebook.

Andy Sernovitz – http://DamnIWish.com is #184,806 with 423 linking in.

Shel Israel – http://redcouch.typepad.com – Again, a subdomain, so Alexa fails, but I’m sure he’d be in there.

    Matt Mullenweg – http://ma.tt – #301,622 with 1,498 linking in.

More as I think of them. ;-)

  7. [...] Ron Hudson’s Top 50 Men in Social Media Ron Hudson, Immediate Influence Blog, has created a great list of the top 50 Women in Social Media. The determining factor was ranking, how much traffic their Website or blog generates. If you have additions you can add at the end of his post: 50 MOST POWERFUL AND INFLUENTIAL MEN IN SOCIAL MEDIA [...]

  8. Ron,
First and foremost, I want to thank you for taking time to compile such a list when I know from my own daily schedule that I barely have time to compile a list of 10.

Secondly, I want to echo your nod and congratulate the other 49 men you chose to put on this very impressive – many of whom I follow and admire.

Candidly, when I saw *my* name on the list of the “50 Most Power and Influential Men in Social Media” I thought it must have been some other “Vincent Wright” – that is until I saw the reference to MyLinkingPowerForum.ning.com

If I may go off on a social media tangent for a moment, in using Twitrratr to look up my name, I discovered a little bit of a positive surprise in seeing that I was on your list. Though I’m a regular reader of Immediate Influence Blog and just tweeted about you post on the 50 Most Influential Women, I hadn’t heard of the Men’s version until I saw Wendy Bailey’s tweet about it at: http://twitter.com/wendyybailey/statuses/969691894

Here’s what that surprising tweet said:

“@jim_turner @vincentwright @warrenwhitlock Congrats on being on the 50 most powerful and influential men in social media. Way kewl!”

…from TweetDeck in reply to jim_turner

How kewl, INDEED! Thanks, Wendy! :-)

    Thanks, and Keep STRONG, Ron!!

  9. wow- thank you and thank you–thats a hoot- being included with all these folks-and many more should have been in as LOTS of great people in social media today.

  10. thanks and thanks again- wow- what an honor and a hoot at the same time!

  11. Well, it’s good to know that your men’s list wasn’t as short-sighted as the women’s list!

Still, though, what’s with the Alexa ranking? Social media gurus never live by that number.

I know our BLOGi360 system really helped with the rankings for myself, @BobTheTeacher and @TimothyCarter.

Thanks for your work. I know this took a lot of effort on your part. You are a great American my man. ;-)

  15. Marc Meyer says:

Alexa is not the measuring stick for social media influencers and thoughtleaders. It does not measure body of work, sphere of influence, reputation, clients, history, achievements, peers, books written and or the number of times these people give of themselves day in and day out.
